Rebuilding Together Omaha is Participating in Omaha Gives! on Wednesday, May 22

We are excited to announce our participation in Omaha Gives! this Wednesday, May 22. It is one day to raise as much as you can for your favorite nonprofits in Omaha through online fundraising. We can’t wait to prove how generous Omaha can be so mark your calendars because we will need your help!

Rebuilding Together Omaha is proud to be participating in Omaha Gives! – a 24-hour charitable challenge organized by the Omaha Community Foundation. The online giving holiday will take place on Wednesday, May 22 from midnight to midnight. Mark your calenders because we will need your help!

We will be joining nearly 300 local nonprofits to raise money together and compete for matching funds and prize money. The more money we raise, the larger the percentage of the match pool we will receive. The more donors we get to give to us, the more likely we are to win prize money.

Raising the Roof for Melvin!

To kick off Omaha Gives!, we are raising the roof for Melvin D. of North Omaha. Melvin will get his roof replaced on May 22 by Quality First Roofing. His roof dormer is currently covered by a tarp and the second story ceilings are heavily damaged. Once the roof is done, the house can be better insulated and ceilings repaired. There is also the need for retrofitting the bathroom to make it easier and safer for him. We can’t wait to see the dramatic changes we are making to keep Melvin safe and warm in his house!

Melvin is a great community figure and looked up to by kids in his neighborhood. He has lived in his North Omaha house for 44 years and is a retired member of the Local 538 Cement Masons Union. When his house was in better shape, he loved hosting parties for family and friends. We hope he can start hosting again after we fix his roof on Wednesday!

Rebuilding Together Team Recruitment forms on line

The 2013 Rebuilding Day event is scheduled for April 27, 2013.  The new team captain forms are on the Rebuilding Together Omaha website.  As you begin your holiday party circuit, consider talking about your past experiences and begin recruiting new team members for next year.  In addition to the team captain forms (on the lower right hand side of the page) you will also find a homeowner application.  Since there is no date on the application we’ll have an indication that it is from the webpage.

Mid-November actions

Wells Fargo Corporate has donated $50,000 to help kick off our roof repair and replacement program.  Thank you very much.  This will help low income and disabled homeowners remain in their homes and hopefully be able to keep their homes insured.

We visited a roofing supply company this week to get steps in motion for getting roofs on homes.  We met with two homeowners and are establishing procedures to move from roof evaluations to supply needs to labor costs for the projects.  We hope to get a few projects done while the weather holds out.  Would you want a roof that leaks only when leaves are not on the tree?  Marilyn would…she as branches showing through the stairway ceiling.

Thanksgiving weekend is upon us.  We’re starting the holiday by having a painting and glazing event at Denise’s house this afternoon.  We hope to finish up the work started by MAXX Property employees in October.

The bathroom is done at Virgil’s house and they are delighted to have new facilities.  We’re lining up supplies and materials for a two day effort to replace kitchen cabinets in December.  If you’re a carpenter and would like to help…contact us.

Our first Team Captain/House Selection committee meeting was last week.  We’ll have another one the first week in December.  We anticipate additional training for a few team captains to focus repair efforts on health and safety items that were highlighted at the National Conference earlier this month.
