Today there is urgent need for home modifications for elderly and disabled homeowners:
- Each year more than 11 million Americans over 65 – one out of every three – fall down.
- Hip fractures cost an average of $33,000 per patient for medical care.
- Most alarming, falls are the leading cause of death from injury to people over 65.
Now the good news:
- One-half of home accidents, including falls, can be prevented by making a few simple changes.
- A sensible home modification strategy will allow homeowners to stay in their home as long as they want.
- By planning ahead, we can save a considerable amount of money and prevent problems from happening.
This program uses volunteers and trade professionals to help people age in place by adapting
to their living environment. The most common home modifications include installing grab bars,
railings, and ramps, and making improvements to lighting. The result is that homeowners can
stay where they want to be – in their own homes, at the same time live in safety, and
independence.
The Rebuilding Together Omaha 'Service Area is east of 52nd Street to the river, south to Harrison, and north to Interstate 480. These are the oldest homes; on average, the oldest homeowners; and the lowest income area in our community.
