In 1988, with 13 loosely organized programs in operation, Rebuilding Together, USA was formed. The organization was started as "Christmas in April" and the first office was in the basement of Patty Johnson's Washington D.C. home. Johnson served as the first Executive Director of the D.C. affiliate and was chosen as the first President and CEO of the national organization. Gary Officer was elected to be the 2nd CEO of Rebuilding Together, USA in October of 2006. The national office assists in the planning, development, and coordination of services, as well as focusing on replicating the volunteer rehabilitation model in cities and towns across the nation. Twenty years later there are 235 affiliates serving more than 1,800 cities and towns across America. In 2007 over 272,000 volunteers donated their time and skills on 9,700 houses and non-profit facilities delivering $100 million in market value to communities across this country. The organization, recognizing the growing needs of low-income homeowners, expanded its mission in 1997 to provide more year-round services and a greater diversity of services, all focused around the core goal of rehabilitation and revitalization. With the expanded mission came a new name, a name that reflects the work and the partnership approach used by our organization - REBUILDING TOGETHER. Today various service modules are underway in many communities, among them emergency services, home modifications, weatherizing and non-profit facility repair. The Omaha affiliate was formed in January 1995, with the first Rebuilding Day in April 1996. During our first year, we rehabilitated 5 homes; in 2007 we rehabbed 25 homes doing repairs with a market value of over $250,000. We are a year-round program with trade professionals assisting 70 families each year with emergency repairs from unplugging drains, to replacing bathrooms and critical electrical repairs. We also provide home modifications like grab bars, handrails, and handicap toilets to families with disabilities to improve movement and assist homeowners with general maintenance. In total, our Omaha programs provided over $341,250 in contributions to the Omaha Community |
